Alfa Romeo tradition
Alfa Romeo’s long-awaited 4C sports car
should be in Australian showrooms by
the time this issue of Horizons is mailed
out. The 4C promises to recall three of
the most treasured Alfa Romeo traditions:
beautiful styling, great handling and of
course, rear-wheel drive. Priced from
approximately $80,000, initial versions of
the two-seater 4C will have a mid-mounted
1.75-litre turbo four-cylinder engine-making
177kW and 350Nm. Gear changes will
be taken care of by Alfa’s TCT automatic
twin-clutch transmission. While the 4C is full
of modern sports-car technology, its name
harks back to the legendary 8C and 6C
sports and grand touring cars of the 1930s.
A convertible version of the 4C is due to
arrive in Australia in 2015.
It wasn’t long ago that high-intensity
discharge lamps were the latest thing in
vehicle headlights, but even they became
old hat in 2008 when Audi introduced
LEDs (light-emitting diodes) as the main
light source for its supercar, the R8. Now,
BMW and Audi have announced new cars
with laser headlights. It sounds like the
car Star Wars character Luke Skywalker
might drive to the shops when he runs
out of milk, but neither manufacturer
is looking for a role in a science fiction
movie. BMW’s laser high beams will be
available on the i8 hybrid supercar when
it becomes available later this year, while
Audi was the first to bring laser high
beams to market when its R8 LMX went
on sale in May.
When Land Rover enthusiast Mark Davis bought this
early 1970s Series 3 example of the marque, it was
in desperate need of restoration. Earlier this year, he
finished restoring the vintage off-roader but left one
major part – the paint job – just as he found it. Mr Davis
bought the Land Rover as a wreck from an Aboriginal
elder, who had driven it around Australia three times.
During that time, as the elder stayed at different
communities, his hosts painted Dreamtime stories on
the Landy’s body panels. Mr Davis said the elder allowed
him to purchase the Land Rover on the basis that the
paintings would remain on the vehicle. The distinctive
Land Rover makes regular appearances on the classic
car show circuit in WA.
Updated Nissan X-Trail
The last X-Trail was a huge sales success
for Nissan Australia, but a major update was
overdue by the time this third generation
model arrived earlier this year. The new
X-Trail introduces an all-new body style that
echoes other models in the current line-up
such as the Pathfinder. It also introduces a
seven-seat option. Engine choices at launch
comprised only two petrols – a 2.0 -litre
and a 2.5 -litre, although Nissan has said a
1.6 -litre diesel would become available in
September 2014. Watch out for a road test in
an upcoming edition of Horizons.
Land Roving art
amazing new blue-block
"They looked like ordinary sunglasses,
but I got the surprise of my life when
I put them on ..."
I FOUND I could see right through glare
with a striking clarity. Everything appeared
sharper, crisper and more defined - like a
kind of enhanced 3D effect. And colours were
much brighter, vibrant and more ‘alive’.
I kept taking them off and putting them on
again to make sure that what I was seeing was
actually sharper, and not just my imagination
playing tricks on me. But the improvement
was definitely there. It was obvious.
I then put on my $160 sunglasses to
compare. They were dull, blurry and glarey
- no comparison. I was impressed. But why
did these BLOK® sunglasses make such a
big difference? I discovered there are two
And most importantly, it’s how the sun’s blue
rays affect the retina in your eyes. Your retina is
like the film in old cameras, it captures images.
And because blue rays are so short in the visible
spectrum, they land just in front of your retina,
not directly on it, as do other colours.
This causes what scientists refer to as
Chromatic Aberration or "Blue Blur" - a chaotic
scattering of blue rays that obstruct and dilute
every other colour as it enters your eye. They
believe this results in reduced visual sharpness,
eyestrain and fatigue.
BLOK® lenses filter these blue rays, allowing
all colours to focus clearly on your retina. So
colours are enhanced and objects appear much
sharper and clearer*, even in low light conditions.
And because they are no longer battling blue
rays, you’ll immediately notice a soothing,
relaxation effect on your eyes - no matter how
extreme the sunlight.
The lenses are polarised. Polarised lenses
have an invisible film which acts like a ‘venetian
blind’ blocking the horizontal glare bouncing off
water, cars and other shiny surfaces. They’re
particularly good for driving as they very
noticeably cut hazardous dashboard reflections
on your windscreen.
The remarkable effect of this blue-block and
polarised combination got me very excited about
the value of this product. But I soon learnt even
more facts that absolutely convinced me.
BLOK® lenses also block harmful UV rays
and are made from anti-scratch CR-39, one of
the finest high resolution lens materials in the
world. The polarisation and filters are part of the
lens itself - not a cheap
coating that can rub off later.
The black unisex frame is made from Hi-Flex
TR90 Nylon, making it super strong and
durable - yet so light and comfortable you will
hardly know you’re wearing sunglasses.
For polarised sunglasses of this quality,
without our lens, you could easily pay $200
upwards. But because we don’t sell to shops
(no ‘middlemen’), we can supply them directly
to you for just $79 plus $8 post & handling.
Each pair comes with a Microfibre carry case
and has a full ONE year warranty.
